Weird bucket list item: become an usher. It happened! And from the vest, to the camaraderie, to supporting the arts who tour through town, it has been a better volunteer gig than I imagined.
To celebrate their 700+ volunteers, The Straz Center for the Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida threw the most sophisticated (and immaculately organized, providing the pleasure of existing in the middle of a perfectly executed event) of dinner affairs. It was an event that made you leave at the end of the evening feeling two dress sizes heavier and very appreciated. But, to have hundreds of volunteers in the first place, this “work” clearly means something to a lot of people.
It seems as good a time as any to reflect on my (brief) ushering career at one of the places that make me the happiest.
